Today Dad , Mom, Jeanette and I returned to Mason City to hear the results of the PET Scan and MRI.
(Following is a lay explanation of a scan.)
When you have a PET scan you are given radioactive "sugar" that is then used by any spot that needs a lot of energy( Like cancer) Because your brain uses so much energy, a PET scan isn't very helpful in detecting spots there so an MRI is used.(thanks Lena and Mom for the lesson!)
The cancer has spread to some of the lymph nodes around the lung so surgery is not an option. There are lymph nodes on both the right and left side so that means it is staged at 3B. The good news is that there appears to be no other spots where the cancer moves;brain, liver or bone.
The plan now will be to move from the pulmonologist to the radiation oncologist and oncologist. Dad will have 6 weeks of treatment. Radiation 5 days a week and chemo one day. It will be done in Mason City on an out patient basis. Dad has a wonderful care coordinator who will set up a conference call with the doctors on Friday so that Mark , Janice and Lena will be able to listen in to the appointment and ask questions. If our work schedules allow, Jeanette and I will go, otherwise we will listen in also.
